How to Choose the Right Light Bulb
Choosing the right light bulb doesn't have to be complicated. With different fittings, brightness levels and colours available, it can sometimes be difficult to know which bulb is right for your home.
Here are a few things to check before you buy.
1. Check the fitting
The first thing to check is that the bulb will fit your light.
Some of the most common fittings include:
-
BC (B22) – a bayonet fitting with two side pins.
-
ES (E27) – a larger Edison screw fitting.
-
SES (E14) – a smaller Edison screw fitting, often used in table lamps.
-
GU10 – commonly used for spotlights.
-
G9 – a small pin fitting often found in decorative lights.
If you're replacing an existing bulb, check the fitting on the old bulb before ordering.
2. Look at lumens, not just watts
Watts measure how much energy a bulb uses, while lumens measure how much light it produces.
As a general guide:
-
400–500 lumens – softer lighting
-
600–800 lumens – suitable for many everyday lamps
-
800–1,500+ lumens – brighter general lighting
The right brightness will depend on the size and purpose of the room.
3. Choose your colour temperature
The colour of your bulb can make a big difference to the atmosphere of a room.
Warm white (around 2,700K–3,000K)
A warm, cosy light that's ideal for bedrooms, living rooms and relaxing spaces.
Cool white (around 3,500K–4,100K)
A cleaner, more neutral light that works well in kitchens, bathrooms and home offices.
Daylight (5,000K+)
A bright, crisp light that can be useful for workshops, garages and areas where you need clearer task lighting.
4. Check if you need a dimmable bulb
If your light is controlled by a dimmer switch, make sure you buy a dimmable bulb.
Not all LED bulbs are dimmable, so always check the product specifications before purchasing.
5. Don't forget the size
Even if the fitting is correct, the bulb still needs to fit inside your lampshade or light fitting.
Bulbs come in many different shapes and sizes, including candle, globe, GLS, reflector and tubular styles.
If you're unsure, compare the size of your existing bulb with the replacement before ordering.
